In 2009, he was appointed to the Commission for Combating Attempts to Falsify History (cancelled in 2012).

In Ukraine, Markov’s statements and actions were criticized by various politicians, the SBU declared him persona non grata in Ukraine. He is in the database of the MIROTVORETS center.

Sanctions. On June 21, 2018, he was included in Ukraine’s sanctions list for calling on Ukrainian security forces to side with Russia. NSDC notes that Markov “actively supports actions and policies that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as stability and security in Ukraine.""”

In 2022, after the Russian incursion of Ukraine, as a Russian propagandist and a regular guest of propaganda and talk shows, Markov was included in the FBC list of corruptors and warmongers, with a proposal to introduce international sanctions against him.

On June 27, 2022, he was added to Canada’s sanctioned list of “regime associates” for “supporting Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.”"
